"The War on Christmas" Bit Show (Submissions Open)
WHAT IS A “BIT SHOW?”
A bit show is a sketch comedy show organized around a central theme. Sketches are submitted and (if accepted) performed by different individuals, pairs, groups, etc. The show is often (loosely) tied together by a host (or hosts), who talk to the crowd as if they're part of the action. For example, if a show was summer-camp themed, hosts might be counselors presenting the end-of-camp talent show. Sketches would revolve around aspects of summer camp life.
WHAT IS THIS SHOW’S PREMISE?
Because of the ongoing “War on Christmas,” Santa has become discouraged and is considering canceling Xmas this year. His two head elves are producing a benefit-style show at the North Pole to raise awareness of the importance of Christmas and convince Santa not to cancel the holiday.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Sketches that give a funny/absurd look into the lives of holiday-influenced characters. Characters need not address the "War on Christmas" theme, and they can speak directly to the audience or keep the 4th wall intact. Characters/scenarios are infinite. A few ideas to get your brain going:
- Mrs. Claus Talking to Therapist About Her Marriage
- Elves Organizing a Workers’ Strike
- Krampus Undergoing a Beauty Makeover
- Reindeer Concerned They’ll be “Retired” to the Venison Farm
- Mom Discussing Her Black Friday Strategy
- Rabbis Brainstorming How to Do Bigger Numbers for Hanukah This Year
- Child on Santa’s Lap Concerned Capitalism is Making America an Oligarchy
(Note: Maybe stay away from portraying Santa himself, since he’s likely to make a cameo at the end decreeing that Xmas will not be canceled.)
HOW DO I SUBMIT?
Write up a one-paragraph summary of the sketch you intend to write and perform. Then submit it using the form below.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY SKETCH BE?
The shorter and punchier, the better. It can be a quick, one-joke thing with a blackout (10-30 seconds) or up to 5 minutes. Keep in mind that there will be fewer slots for longer sketches, so it’s in your best interest to keep things tight.
CAN I SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE IDEA FOR A SKETCH?
Yes! There is a finite number of slots we can offer, but you may submit as many ideas as you like.
WHAT’S THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE?
The submission deadline for your one-paragraph summary is Wed, Nov 22. Should one or more of your proposals be accepted, we will expect you to have the final draft(s) of the sketch(es) completed (and the cast finalized) by Wed, Dec 13.
WHEN IS THE SHOW?
Sunday, December 17th at 7:30pm.
WILL THERE BE A MANDATORY TECH RUN-THROUGH?
Yes, on Sunday, December 17th from 4pm-5pm.
MY SKETCH IDEA HAS TECH REQUIREMENTS. IS THAT COOL?
Music and sound effect cues are no problem. Lights should be an up/down cue (no spotlights, colored lights or specialty lighting is possible). Video projection with our current setup is difficult, and unless it’s absolutely necessary, you should stay away from it. We are NOT looking for video sketches for this show.
OKAY, I’M INTERESTED! HOW DO I SUBMIT?
