Hosting for Standup Comedy

Hosting a comedy show is not the same as performing "regular" standup - it's a unique skill that is in demand by comedy producers. Many times the first opportunity a comedy producer will offer is a hosting slot; if you aren't able to host effectively, you're giving up potential stage time and booking opportunities - in Vermont and in larger comedy markets.

In this one-day workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of hosting a good show, including building a likable stage persona; when to do material and when to ad lib with a crowd; how to get the audience back after a comic bombs; and much more. You can't afford NOT to learn these important skills if you're serious about standup!

About the Instructor

Nathan Hartswick is a native Vermonter with extensive experience as a performer and educator. As a standup comic, Nathan won the "Best VT Standup Comic" Daysie (readers' choice award) from Seven Days in 2012 and 2013. He was a semi-finalist in the Funniest Comic in New England contest in 2012, and the grand prize winner of the 2011 Higher Ground Comedy Battle.

In 2009, Nathan and his wife Natalie Miller founded a booking agency to produce and promote comedy in Vermont (including the annual Vermont's Funniest Comedian contest and the Green Mountain Comedy Festival). The two began teaching classes in comedy in 2011. In the fall of 2015 they opened Vermont Comedy Club, a 160-seat standup and improv comedy club in the heart of downtown Burlington. In addition to operating the business day to day, they teach comedy classes and perform with The Unmentionables, the club's MainStage long form improv comedy troupe.

Nathan has studied comedy with some of the country's foremost instructors from Upright Citizens Brigade, The Second City, iO and more.
