WHEN & WHERE IS THE KICKOFF EVENT?
The Kickoff Event takes place at 6pm in the lounge at Vermont Comedy Club (101 Main Street, Burlington VT) on Fri, Jun 21st.
MUST I ATTEND THE KICKOFF EVENT?
Your entire team need not be present at the Kickoff Event (nor do you have to know all the members of your team at that time). The Team Leader must attend the Kickoff Event; attendance by other team members is optional (but encouraged)!
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE KICKOFF EVENT?
Your signed Team Leader form.
WHAT WILL WE BE ASSIGNED AT THE KICKOFF EVENT?
All teams will be assigned the same three elements that must appear in all films: 1) a specific character [this need not be main character], 2) a prop [must be seen/used in the film], and 3) a line of dialogue [which can be spoken or seen/written]. All three of these things must appear in your film - credits don’t count.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY FILM BE?
It should be a minimum of 4 minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes. This does not include the opening slate (see rules) or the end credits (which should not exceed 60 seconds).
DO I HAVE TO KNOW THE EXACT ROSTER OF MY TEAM IN ADVANCE?
No. Once you are off and running, you may be adding people to your team - actors, crew, etc. As you add them, you must require them to sign the Waiver & Liability form.
WHAT RESTRICTIONS ARE THERE ON SELECTING TEAM MEMBERS?
There are no restrictions to how large or small your team can be, and people can be on multiple teams (though one person may not act as Team Leader for multiple teams). ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE VOLUNTEERS.
WHAT ARE WE ALLOWED TO PLAN IN ADVANCE?
The only things you may plan in advance are A) team members you wish to be involved, and B) the sub-genre of your film. NO OTHER ADVANCE WORK is to be done prior to the Kickoff Event (no outlines, casting, shooting, editing, etc.).
WHAT CAN I USE TO SHOOT MY FILM WITH?
There are no restrictions on the type of equipment, or the number (or type) of cameras you may use.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE FINAL SCREENING?
The final screening takes place at 7pm on Sun, Jun 23rd. Location is TBD.

DO I GET COMP TICKETS TO THE SCREENING FOR MY TEAM?
WHEN IS MY FINAL FILM DUE (AND HOW DO I DELIVER IT)?
Final films are due at 6pm on Sun, Jun 23rd. They must be delivered in digital format (via flash drive, etc.) or via internet link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). No DVDs or CD-Rs will be accepted. If you are delivering a digital file it is a good idea to export in a few formats to be safe (mov, m4v, etc.).

Signed Waiver & Liability forms from ALL members of your cast & crew.
WHO OWNS MY FILM AT THE END?
At the end of the project, the ownership of each film becomes that of the Team Leader. Should that person choose to distribute it, it will be their responsibility to ensure they have legal permission from all performers, crew, musicians, etc. who appear in the film. Vermont Comedy Club and the LACK OF FOCUS Project retain the right to disseminate your film (or parts of it) for promotional use.
WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC SHOULD I USE?
You do not have to use public domain or rights-purchased music for your film, but be aware that A) if you choose to deliver it via YouTube link, your film may be taken down if it uses popular music, and B) using popular music will likely prevent you from distributing the film in the future. We recommend using purchased music (premiumbeat.com, etc.) or music composed and recorded by local musicians from whom you have permission.
CAN I USE STOCK FOOTAGE?
You may only use stock footage to create a special visual or audio effect (bullets, explosions, fires, etc.) or to create mood in the background (newscaster on TV in a room, for instance). No stock footage may be used as the principal footage in a shot/scene.
CAN I POST FOOTAGE OF MY FILM DURING THE WEEKEND?
During the 48-hour production period, you are not allowed to distribute ANY part of your film (still images, video footage, audio, etc.). You MAY share “behind the scenes” style photos/video so long as it does not show any still photos that spoil images that will be seen in the film. OK: Crew working on setups, actors not in costume, etc. NOT OK: pics of actors during a take/in costume, extensive location photos, etc. Let’s not spoil the mystery! (After the screening, you are free to post and share anything you want!)
WHAT IS MY FILM BEING SCREENED ON?
To be determined (based on venue).
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SCREENING?
The order will be selected at random by the producers. Each film will be played in its entirety and then three judges will give feedback on the film. At the end of the evening, prizes will be given out for the best films.
WHAT ABOUT THESE JUDGES & PRIZES?
Judges will be announced closer to the event, as well as prizes (which will be nominal). The inaugural year of the LACK OF FOCUS event is about creating entertaining content on a deadline and celebrating it with an audience. Don’t sign up to gain entry into the Director’s Guild or win a million bucks.
